The Mt. Rooster-Dragon Mountain-Spirit Ceremonial Festival [Gye-ryong-san San-shin-je]
This page: photos of the 2001 Northern-Shamanist San-shin Ceremony
This ceremony was held on the afternoon of the day of the Third Full Moon of 2001, at a large cleared area and stage a few hundred meters in front of Shinwon-sa [Garden of the Spirits Temple]. Korea's northern-style Shamanism is quite different from the southern-style; one thing that distinguishes them is the fevered trance that the Mudang goes into as she handles then "miraculously" balances (on her trident; top photo) the sacrificial hog.

As the ritual concludes, a farmer's band plays percussion tunes as the crowd (including myself) dances up a storm. This is an essential stage in a San-shin-je, ensuring that the blessings sought will flow to everyone present.
